Hemp has tremendous potential as an alternative to traditional break crops to overcome challenges ranging from establishment to pest loads and spring cultivations due to ground conditions whilst adding diversity into the crop rotation.

The late spring planting allows the application of herbicides late into spring and the establishment of a truly stale seed bed. Further, the crop requires few if any inputs – reducing leaching of nutrients, compaction from traffic and the associated compaction. After the crop emerges there is no requirement for pesticides.

Innovation

Hemp has tremendous potential as an alternative to traditional break crops which face increasing challenges ranging from establishment to pest loads and spring cultivations due to ground conditions whilst adding diversity into the crop rotation.

The late spring planting allows the application of blackgrass pesticide late into spring and the establishment of a truly stale seed bed. Further, the crop requires few if any inputs – reducing leaching of nutrients, traffic and the associated compaction. There is no requirement for herbicides nor pesticides.

Tillage preferences can be maintained.

Sustainability

Manufacturers utilising synthetic and natural fibres face considerable headwinds ranging from consumer preferences, cross-border supply chains and regulation.

Most synthetic fibres are derived from hydrocarbons. These are created such as rayon or nylon or derived from waste from oil and gas production such as carbon fibre.

Natural fibres face a different but equally pernicious challenge. Sustainable fibres such as bamboo, coconut, jute etc are grown in tropical climates requiring processed material to travel vast distances for utilisation in manufacturing and distribution. Cotton is ubiquitous but unsustainable by almost every measure – miles travelled, water consumption, pesticide usage and residues, water contamination from cleaning and bleaching and modern-day slavery. It is the natural fibre that is the backbone of apparel, healthcare and many other industries.

Additionally, hemp improves soil structure and sequesters vast amounts of carbon in its extremely short vegetative growth phase.
